Missed the event? Here is a recap of what Andrew discussed during the seminar.

  • Preparation and communication is the key to Estate Planning
  • Keep your estate legal documents up to date – when was the last time you updated your will? Have there been changes to the family makeup that warrant changes?
  • Choose your Executor wisely – it takes time and attention to detail; they are the ultimate decision maker. If the Executor does not have all the skill sets then look into identifying, ahead of time, professionals that could help
  • New Estate Filing rules in Ontario have made the executor’s tasks a little more onerous
  • Digital Rewards, files (ie. photos, etc) and Footprints is a growing part of an Estate transition that we did not have to worry so much about prior
  • Work towards simplifying your Estate over time
  • Run the Estate like a business, keeping all correspondence, tax filings, etc in one file credenza – the Estate can be audited, family members can question decisions, etc
  • Take the time to fill out the Will Companion (available in PDF format from your advisor), which is the roadmap for the Executor as to where and what is in your Estate
  • Your advisor has a PDF fillable Executor Duty Checklist that can be used by the Executor to ensure proper tracking, tasks, etc are documented
  • Take the time to sit down with your advisor to start(expand) the conversation of your Estate Plan wishes – don’t let those Emotional Blocks stop you from leaving a strong legacy. Working with an advisor and their team of professionals that understands a 100% of your family’s wishes can lead to a successful Estate transition and peace of mind
